300 Stray Dogs Killed in Telangana Villages
In two villages in Telangana, around 300 stray dogs were poisoned and killed over three days.
Animal welfare activists found out and reported it to the police.
The police have arrested several local leaders and others involved in the killings.
The activists say killing dogs is not the right way to control their numbers and that the government should instead focus on sterilizing and vaccinating them.
A former minister also got involved and asked the police to investigate properly.
The activists hope this will lead to better animal care in the future.
Around 300 stray dogs were poisoned and killed in Shayampet and Arepalli villages, Hanamkonda district, between January 6 and 8.
Animal welfare activists Farzana Begum and Adulapuram Goutham reported the incident, leading to an FIR against nine individuals, including local sarpanches and panchayat secretaries.
The accused were booked under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 11 (1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Activists argue that mass killing of stray animals is illegal and ineffective, advocating for strict implementation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023, and large-scale sterilization and vaccination programs.
The complaint was filed on January 9, and the police have registered a case against the accused.
