US Debt Tops $40 Trillion, Raising Household Borrowing Concerns

The United States now owes more than $40 trillion.

This debt comes from money the government has borrowed over many years.

The government spends large amounts on health care, Social Security, defense, and interest on earlier borrowing.

To borrow more money, it sells Treasury securities to investors.

If investors demand higher returns, interest rates on mortgages, car loans, and credit cards may also rise.

Large interest payments can leave less money for other government programs.

The government is projected to spend about $7.4 trillion in fiscal year 2026 while collecting $5.6 trillion.

Economists say continuing to borrow at this pace could create greater financial pressure in the future.
