Government Boosts Budget for Power Schemes
The Indian government has increased the budget for two important schemes.
The first scheme, PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana, helps poor households install solar panels on their roofs to get free electricity.
The government has given ₹22,000 crore for this scheme in the new budget, which is more than last year.
The second scheme, Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), aims to improve the power distribution companies (discoms) by installing smart meters and reducing their debt.
The government has allocated ₹18,000 crore for this scheme.
So far, only about 19.45% of the solar panels have been installed, and 52.8 million smart meters have been set up out of the target of 250 million.
The government hopes these schemes will help provide better electricity services to everyone.
The PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana received a ₹22,000 crore allocation in the 2026-27 budget, a ₹5,000 crore increase from the revised estimates for 2025-26.
The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) received a ₹18,000 crore allocation in the 2026-27 budget, an increase from the ₹15,671 crore allocated for FY26.
The RDSS aims to install 250 million smart meters, with only 52.8 million installed so far, and has been extended till FY28.
Power distribution companies (discoms) have cumulative debt of over ₹7 trillion, and the RDSS aims to reduce AT&C losses to 12-15% by 2024-25.
The PM Surya Ghar Mufti Bijli Yojana aims to install solar rooftop systems on one crore households, with 19.45% completion as of December 9, 2025.
