India's Road Safety Crisis: Experts Call for Data-Driven Reforms
Imagine roads in India are like a playground where too many people are getting hurt.
Experts, like doctors for roads, had a meeting to figure out why.
They said that roads often aren't built the safest way, rules about how fast to drive or wear helmets aren't always followed, and different groups don't always work together well.
They also found that India has a lot of people dying in crashes compared to how many cars it has.
So, they wrote a plan with tips, like using better information to fix roads, making sure roads are designed better, and holding people in charge more responsible.
Their big goal is to cut the number of people getting hurt or dying on roads by half by the year 2030, making it much safer for everyone to travel.
Experts convened a virtual dialogue hosted by the Road Safety Network (RSN) to address India's high road fatality rates.
A whitepaper was launched, proposing a roadmap to reduce road fatalities by 50% by 2030 through data-led governance and improved road design.
India recorded over 480,000 road crashes and 172,000 deaths in 2023, disproportionately high for its vehicle ownership.
Key issues identified include weak enforcement, unsafe road design, and a lack of coordinated governance.
Recommendations emphasize adopting a 'Safe System Approach,' prioritizing vulnerable road users, speed management, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws like helmet usage.
