Satheesan Slams Publisher Over Sonia Gandhi Memoir Censorship Row

Sonia Gandhi has written a memoir called Belonging: A Journey of Love.

The book discusses her childhood in Italy, her marriage to Rajiv Gandhi and painful losses in her family.

Reports said changes were proposed to parts of the book before its publication in India.

The reported changes included references to Narendra Modi, the RSS and China.

Sonia Gandhi is understood to have disagreed with the proposed changes.

V.D. Satheesan said changing facts to satisfy powerful people would hurt democracy.

Penguin Random House India said it is not the book’s Indian publisher and denied that its position was accurately described as withdrawing over the changes.

The publisher said fact-checking and suggesting edits are normal parts of publishing.

Alfred A. Knopf plans to publish the memoir internationally on November 10, while its Indian publication plans are unsettled.
