Markfed Begins Tobacco Procurement in Parchur to Aid Farmers
Farmers who grow black burley tobacco were having trouble selling their crops because private companies weren't buying them.
This meant the farmers weren't getting fair prices.
To help, the government stepped in and had Markfed, a state-owned organization, start buying the tobacco directly.
This happened in Parchur on Saturday, after the local leader, Yeluri Sambasiva Rao, spoke up for the farmers.
The government is setting up more places to buy the tobacco and will even come to the farms to get it.
The first sale was a success, and the government plans to keep buying until the end of the season.
