Kenyan Editor Found Safe After Armed Abduction, Employer Says
Alex Kiprotich is an editor who works for a large Kenyan news company.
Armed and masked men took him from a car near Nakuru on Tuesday night.
His employer said he was later found safe near Masinga Dam, far away from where he was taken.
Video appeared to show four men leaving a vehicle during the incident.
People could hear screams from the car.
The company said the men wanted Kiprotich to reveal the newspaper’s sources.
His boss also said armed men had tried to take him in June.
Police said they were investigating in one account, while another report said a police spokesperson did not immediately respond.
The government has denied broader claims that security agencies abduct critics, although President William Ruto has acknowledged excessive and extrajudicial conduct by some security personnel.
Alex Kiprotich, an associate editor at Standard Group, was taken from a car near Nakuru shortly before 9:20 p.m. Tuesday.
Standard Group said armed men left Kiprotich near Masinga Dam, more than 200 kilometers southeast of Nakuru, where he was found safe.
Dashcam footage appeared to show four armed, masked men emerging from a vehicle, while screams could be heard from Kiprotich’s car.
Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita said abductors demanded information about the newspaper’s sources and linked the incident to Kiprotich’s journalism.
Police and government officials disputed or denied broader allegations of state-linked abductions, while the Committee to Protect Journalists called for an investigation.
