Navi Pillay Wins 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for Justice Work

Navi Pillay is a South African lawyer who has spent much of her career defending people’s rights.

She stood up for people who opposed apartheid, including Nelson Mandela.

Later, she became a judge at a court investigating crimes during the genocide in Rwanda.

A major ruling there said rape can be part of genocide when it is done with the required intent.

Pillay also worked at the International Criminal Court and led the United Nations human rights office.

In 2026, she won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work on peace and international law.

She also led a UN inquiry whose report said Israel committed genocide in Gaza.

Israel rejected that report’s conclusion.
