AIIMS Achieves Success with Metabolic Surgery for Uncontrolled Diabetes
Doctors at AIIMS in Delhi have been performing a special surgery called metabolic surgery to help people with uncontrolled Type-2 diabetes.
This surgery changes how the body handles sugar by making the stomach smaller and connecting it to the small intestine.
This helps the body release hormones that control blood sugar levels better.
Over the past year and a half, they have done this surgery on 35 patients, and many of them saw their blood sugar levels improve right away.
Some were even able to stop taking their diabetes medicine.
The surgery is not the first treatment doctors try, but it can be very helpful for people who have not been able to control their diabetes with other treatments.
It usually takes about two hours and can cost a lot in private hospitals, but AIIMS offers it for free.
AIIMS Delhi has successfully performed metabolic surgery on 35 patients with uncontrolled Type-2 diabetes and obesity over the past 15 months.
The surgery helps regulate blood sugar levels by altering the digestive system and releasing key hormones like GLP-1.
Many patients experienced significant improvements in blood sugar control immediately after the procedure, with some able to stop diabetes medications.
The surgery is recommended for adults aged 18 to 65 with persistently high HbA1C levels above 7.5.
While not a first-line therapy, metabolic surgery can be transformative for patients who have not responded to conventional treatments.
