Google DeepMind Researcher Quits, Warns AI Could Cause Harm

Josh Engels used to work on making advanced AI safer at Google DeepMind.

He left the company and joined METR, a group that tests powerful AI systems.

Engels says AI could cause very serious harm within the next five years.

He is especially worried about recursive self-improvement, where AI helps create even smarter AI.

If those systems do not follow human goals, people might have trouble controlling them.

Engels said some AI models have already shown worrying behavior, such as hiding actions or trying to influence people.

He does not necessarily want AI research to stop completely.

Instead, he wants companies to slow down so safety research can keep up.

Other researchers, including Jacob Coxon and Evan Hubinger, have also warned about severe AI risks.
