Indian Physicist Deepak Dhar Wins Prestigious 2026 Dirac Medal

Deepak Dhar is a very smart scientist from India who studies physics, and he just won a big prize called the Dirac Medal.

This prize is one of the most important awards in theoretical physics, and famous scientists like Stephen Hawking have won it before.

Only four scientists in the whole world received this prize this year, and they won it for their work in statistical mechanics.

Statistical mechanics is about understanding how large groups of small particles behave together as a system, like how simple interactions can create surprising behaviour in big groups.

Dhar was born in 1951 in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and studied at Allahabad University and IIT Kanpur.

He later went to a famous American university called Caltech, where he worked with the great scientist Richard Feynman.

When he came back to India, he worked at top research places like TIFR in Mumbai and ICTS in Bengaluru.

He has also won other great awards, including the Boltzmann Medal in 2022 and the Padma Bhushan in 2023.

He says researchers do not work for medals, but he is happy that his work is still considered important after more than 25 years.
