Jal Jeevan Mission Graft Crackdown: Officials, Contractors Face Action in 15 States
Imagine a big government program to bring drinking water to every house with a tap.
Some people who were in charge of building these water systems might have taken extra money or done a bad job.
Because of this, a special group that checks on these things asked many states to report on what happened.
So far, over 500 workers, more than 800 builders, and many inspection companies in 15 different places are being investigated.
Uttar Pradesh had the most complaints, with over 14,000!
Now, officials are looking into these problems to make sure the water systems are built correctly and the money is used well.
Action has been taken against 596 officials, 822 contractors, and 152 Third Party Inspection Agencies (TPIAs) across 15 states and UTs.
The crackdown is due to complaints of financial irregularities and poor quality of work under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
Uttar Pradesh leads with 14,264 complaints, over 85% of the total received.
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) directed states to submit reports on actions taken.
An earlier investigation revealed that changes in mission guidelines led to cost escalations totaling Rs 16,839 crore for 14,586 schemes.
