Rupee Weakens as Oil Surges and Dollar Strengthens
The Indian rupee lost value against the US dollar on Thursday.
It began the day at 95.84 rupees per dollar.
By the end of the day, it had weakened further to about 95.96.
Oil prices were still above USD 100 per barrel.
Expensive oil and a stronger US dollar made it harder for the rupee to improve.
Higher US bond yields also put pressure on the currency.
Indian shares fell, causing investors to become more cautious.
Foreign investors bought Indian shares, but that was not enough to stop the rupee from weakening.
The rupee opened 11 paise lower at 95.84 per US dollar on Thursday.
It later settled 23 paise lower at 95.96, provisionally, after touching 95.98 intraday.
Brent crude remained elevated at USD 102.08 per barrel despite falling 0.97% in the latest session.
A stronger dollar, higher US bond yields, geopolitical uncertainty and domestic equity selling pressured the rupee.
The Sensex fell 506.43 points while the Nifty declined 181 points, despite foreign investors buying equities worth Rs 1,617.45 crore.
