BPP Divided Over Parsi Housing Tenancy Proposal

BPP Divided Over Parsi Housing Tenancy Proposal

The Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP) is divided over a proposal to convert temporary housing agreements into permanent tenancies for residents of Parsi housing colonies.

The majority trustees support the proposal, arguing it provides housing security and follows practices of other Parsi trusts.

They also say that beneficiaries will bear the stamp duty costs and that the 'Parsi-only' covenant will be protected.

However, opponents like trustee Adil Malia warn that the proposal could weaken the Trust's control over properties and make it harder to reclaim possession under the Maharashtra Rent Control Act.

They also question the timing of the proposal, noting that legal opinions were obtained four years ago and wonder why there is sudden urgency now, just eleven months before elections.
