Chennai Metro Rail Expands with New Corridors and Ticketing
Chennai's Metro Rail is planning to expand its network!
They're starting with detailed plans (DPRs) for two new routes.
One route will extend an existing line, connecting areas along the coast and to the High Court.
The other route will connect suburbs like Tambaram and Velachery to Guindy, making it easier to get around.
These plans will study the best routes, how many people will use the trains, and how the new lines will work with buses and other transport.
They are also partnering with Uber to make it easier to buy tickets.
In July 2025, the Chennai Metro Rail saw over one crore passengers use the metro.
Chennai Metro Rail will soon begin Detailed Project Report (DPR) for two key corridors.
Consultancy contracts were awarded for Corridor 4 extension and Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery corridor.
The DPRs will evaluate alignment options, ridership, integration, and feasibility.
Extension of Corridor 4 is approximately 7 km, connecting Lighthouse to High Court.
Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery corridor is approximately 21 km, linking suburbs to Guindy.
