NGT Directs Punjab to Strengthen Tree Preservation Policy
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is making sure Punjab protects its trees.
They found the current tree protection rules are not good enough, especially for trees on private land.
The NGT has told the state government to fix the rules and create a new law to stop people from illegally cutting down trees.
The government is working on this and needs some time to create the law.
The NGT also heard complaints about problems with the existing rules like no place to report tree cutting, no tree count in cities, and trees being cut down at night.
They also worry that utility companies cut trees without consequences and that no new trees are planted to replace the ones that are lost.
The NGT directed Punjab to address shortcomings in its tree preservation policy.
The directive follows a complaint regarding illegal tree cutting in Jalandhar.
The existing policy does not cover trees on private land.
The Punjab Chief Secretary acknowledged the need for better tree protection.
The state will draft a bill and seek six months to finalize it.
