Amit Shah assures Mizoram CM: FCRA retrospective clause to go

In India, there is a law called the FCRA that controls how charities and religious groups can accept money from other countries.

The government wants to change this law, and the new version worried many people.

The worry was about what would happen to buildings and money bought with foreign donations.

Under the proposed rules, if a group's permission to receive foreign money ran out, the government could take charge of its assets.

An even more upsetting part said these rules could reach back and apply to things from the past.

Church groups, the Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma, and other leaders asked the government to fix this.

India's Home Minister Amit Shah promised that this 'retrospective' part would be removed.

He also said the new law would be discussed properly in Parliament before being passed.

A separate group of church representatives also met the Home Minister to ask that the Bill be withdrawn or studied more.

Now the church groups and the government are waiting for the Bill to come up for debate in Parliament.
