India to Overhaul GDP Calculation Methodology
The Indian government is updating how it calculates the country's GDP.
They are removing a confusing part called 'discrepancies' that has been puzzling economists.
The new way of calculating GDP will start using data from the year 2022-23.
The government will also update old GDP numbers to match the new method.
They have asked for feedback from experts to make sure the new method is the best it can be.
The updated GDP numbers will be released in February 2026, and the old numbers will be updated by February 2027.
This change aims to make the GDP numbers more accurate and easier to understand.
MoSPI has released a discussion paper proposing improvements in GDP compilation from the expenditure approach, including the elimination of the 'discrepancies' component.
The new GDP series with a base year of 2022-23 will be released on February 27, 2026.
GDP back series estimates will be published by February 2027.
The ministry has previously released a discussion paper on changes in the production/income approach.
An Advisory Committee on National Account Statistics (ACNAS) has been constituted to advise on new data sources and methodologies.
