79 Years Ago: India's Constituent Assembly First Met

A long time ago, on December 9, 1946, a special group called the Constituent Assembly met for the first time in New Delhi.

This group had an important job: to write the rules, or Constitution, for India, which was about to become independent.

The members were from different backgrounds and had to work together to make sure the rules were fair for everyone.

They started their work in a big, nicely decorated hall.

A man named Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha was in charge at first.

He read messages from other countries like the United States, China, and Australia, who wished them luck.

He also gave a speech, talking about how important their job was and quoting famous writers.

The members then officially joined the assembly by signing their names.

It took them a long time, almost three years, to finish writing the Constitution.
