Chittoor Mango Growers Await Delayed Pulp Industry Payments
Mango farmers in the former combined Chittoor district sold their Totapuri mangoes to factories.
Many farmers say the factories have not paid them yet, even though the mangoes were delivered nearly two months ago.
The government told factories to pay ₹8,000 for each tonne of mangoes.
Some factories reportedly offered only ₹5,000 or ₹6,000 per tonne.
The government also promised farmers an extra ₹4,000 per tonne.
Farmers say about ₹300 crore is still owed by the factories.
A horticulture officer said officials are checking the farmers’ records and working to release the first government payment by September 15.
Farmers want both the factory money and the government incentive to be paid quickly.
Mango growers in the erstwhile combined Chittoor district say pulp industries have delayed payments for fruit supplied nearly two months ago.
Pulp industries purchased nearly five lakh tonnes of mangoes, with about ₹300 crore reportedly still due to farmers.
The government directed industries to pay ₹8,000 per tonne and announced a separate incentive of ₹4,000 per tonne.
Some industries reportedly offered ₹5,000 or ₹6,000 per tonne, while farmers said only around 10% had received payments.
The Horticulture Department is verifying eligibility and targeting release of the first government incentive instalment by September 15.
