NTA Cancels UGC-NET Papers; Editorial Demands Total Overhaul
There is a big testing agency in India called the NTA that runs important exams for students.
This year, it cancelled three papers of a big test called UGC-NET because the papers had many mistakes.
The mistakes included wrong spellings of famous scholars' names and wrong book titles.
The agency said the papers were not fair and that students will have to take the test again.
Students work very hard to prepare for this test, hoping to become teachers and researchers.
The agency has made big mistakes before, like a question paper leak in 2024.
The government set up a committee to fix the agency, but its advice was not followed.
Many people think the agency needs a complete change, not just small fixes.
They want the government to make sure this never happens again.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the English, commerce and sociology papers of the UGC-NET examination held in June this year.
A committee appointed by the NTA found 'many factual, typographical, and translation errors' in the papers, including misspelt scholar names and garbled book titles.
The NTA conceded the papers did not meet standards of fairness and ordered a re-test.
The NTA released this year's UGC-NET answer key one-and-a-half months after the examination, against the usual timeframe of a couple of weeks.
The editorial argues the Union government must make transformational changes to the NTA, noting the 2024 NEET question paper leak and ignored recommendations of the K. Radhakrishnan committee.
