Air Traffic Controller Shortage Causes Sydney Airport Flight Disruptions

Air Traffic Controller Shortage Causes Sydney Airport Flight Disruptions

Sydney Airport had many delayed and cancelled flights on Friday morning.

This happened because there were not enough air traffic controllers working.

Air traffic controllers help airplanes safely take off, land and move through the sky.

About 14 arriving flights were cancelled, and some flights were delayed by more than an hour.

Airservices Australia changed the number of planes allowed to use the airport for a while.

The restrictions ended at 8:15 a.m., and flights were mostly back on time by the afternoon.

The agency said eight of its 49 Sydney controllers were unavailable for long periods.

Officials are also examining several recent situations in which planes came too close to each other.
