Siliguri Mayor Sets Deadline for Bengali Signboards
The mayor of Siliguri wants all businesses to put up signs in Bengali by September 21st.
This is because Bengali is the official language of the state.
The city council decided on this earlier, but businesses asked for more time.
The new deadline is the same day as Mahalaya, a special Bengali event.
Everyone at a recent meeting seemed to agree with the idea, including someone from a different political party.
Siliguri Mayor sets September 21 deadline for Bengali signboards.
The decision was made at a meeting on March 29 and approved in April.
Trade bodies requested an extension from the original June deadline.
Mahalaya, the new deadline, falls on September 21 this year.
BJP councillor Amit Jain welcomed the decision.
