Google's Earthquake Alerts System Failed in Turkey's Deadly Earthquake
Google's earthquake warning system on Android phones didn't work well during the big earthquake in Turkey.
The system thought the earthquake was much smaller than it was, so it didn't send out many important warnings.
Only a few people got warnings telling them to take action.
Experts were upset because Google took too long to explain what went wrong.
Google said its system is meant to work with, not replace, government warnings.
Google's Android Earthquake Alerts (AEA) system failed to provide adequate warnings for the 2023 Turkey earthquake.
The system miscalculated the earthquake's magnitude, resulting in a vast underestimation of its intensity.
Only 469 "Take Action" alerts were issued before the initial 7.8-magnitude tremor.
Experts criticized the delayed transparency regarding the system's shortcomings.
Google has stated the AEA is supplementary, not a replacement, for national warning systems.
