TMC youth leader claims ABVP workers attacked her, hurled eggs
On Independence Day, a young leader named Upasana Chowdhury went to a college in Kolkata, India, to put up the national flag.
She is the president of a student group called the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad and belongs to a political party called the All India Trinamool Congress, or TMC.
She says that people from a student group called the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, or ABVP, stopped her from going into the college.
She also says they pushed her and threw eggs at her.
She says police told her group not to stand at the front of the college and that the police were helping the people who attacked her.
She also said people who were not from the college came in without anyone checking their identity cards.
The group was reportedly stopped because they did not have college identity cards.
A leader from another party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, said the incident was just people showing anger at the TMC.
The police have not said anything yet about what happened.
Because the two sides tell different stories, we do not know exactly what happened.
TMC youth leader Upasana Chowdhury, part of the Mamata Banerjee faction, claimed RSS-affiliated ABVP workers attacked her and stopped her from entering Asutosh College in Kolkata to hoist the national flag on Independence Day morning.
She alleged eggs were hurled at her and she was assaulted during a heated argument at the college entrance.
Chowdhury claimed police personnel told her and other TMC workers not to gather in front of the college and alleged the police were supporting the attackers.
A BJP leader dismissed the allegations, calling the incident a "manifestation of public anger against the TMC," and police did not immediately comment.
Chowdhury, who is also president of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, alleged outsiders entered the college premises without identity checks, while the group was reportedly barred for lacking college identity cards.
