Trump-Xi Trade Truce Offers Gains, Leaves Disputes Unresolved

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met and agreed on several trade steps.

China may reduce tariffs on some American goods, including several farm products.

Soybeans, an important US export to China, were left out.

The countries also gave their current trade truce two more months, until January 10.

This helps avoid an immediate return to higher tariffs, but it does not settle the wider trade dispute.

China also agreed to buy US coal in 2027 and 2028.

The two governments will talk about how to handle AI-related incidents, but they remain competitors in technology.

These agreements may give the Trump administration economic news to point to before the 2026 midterm elections.
