Meta Restrictions on Indian Cartoonists Trigger Free-Speech Pushback

Meta restricted some cartoons by Satish Acharya and Manjul for people in India.

The cartoons were about the Election Commission of India.

Instagram said the restriction followed a government or law-enforcement notice and local-law review.

Acharya said he was not warned before some posts disappeared.

He also said Instagram’s help system made it difficult to appeal.

Other cartoonists created their own drawings to support satire and free expression.

They argued that governments should be able to tolerate jokes and criticism.

Manjul also responded with a cartoon criticizing the judiciary’s treatment of serious concerns.

The disagreement is about whether the restrictions were necessary under Indian law or unfair limits on political expression.
