US May Expand Tariffs on 700 More Steel-Linked Goods
Imagine the US government puts a special tax, called a tariff, on certain things made of steel that come from other countries.
This helps American companies that make similar steel things because their products might seem cheaper now.
Some American companies are asking the government to put this special tax on even more steel-linked items, like parts for bicycles or steel for cans.
They say that too many of these items are being imported, and it's hurting their business.
The government is looking into adding about 700 new items to the list that already has over 400 steel items with extra taxes.
This is part of a bigger trade discussion that might help ease tensions between the US and China, but trade issues still affect global business.
The US may add approximately 700 more steel-linked goods to existing tariffs.
American companies are requesting the expansion to protect their industries.
Goods like bicycles and steel wheels could be added to the tariff list.
The Trump administration previously expanded tariffs on hundreds of derivative steel products in August.
China's exports to the US have dropped, while India's exports to the US have also declined for four consecutive months.
