UGC Introduces New Equity Regulations for Higher Education
The Indian government has introduced new rules for colleges and universities to make sure everyone is treated fairly.
Every school must have a special center to help students who face discrimination.
This center will have a team to look into complaints and make sure the school follows the rules.
The center will also work with local groups and authorities to provide support.
If a school doesn't follow these rules, the government can take action against it.
These rules were made because there have been serious cases of discrimination in the past, and the government wants to prevent such incidents in the future.
The new rules come after a big increase in discrimination cases, especially related to caste.
The government also wants to set up counseling centers to help students deal with the emotional impact of discrimination.
New UGC regulations require HEIs to establish Equal Opportunity Centres (EOCs) to address discrimination and promote equity.
EOCs will oversee equity policies, provide support to disadvantaged groups, and coordinate with local authorities and civil society.
Each EOC must have an Equity Committee with representation from OBCs, SCs, STs, PwDs, and women.
Institutions must also set up Equity Squads to maintain vigil and prevent discriminatory practices.
Non-compliance with these regulations may result in action from the UGC.
