Courts Reduce Sentences in Child Sexual Assault Cases

Courts Reduce Sentences in Child Sexual Assault Cases

In two different cases, Indian courts reduced the punishments for men who were found guilty of sexually assaulting young girls.

In the first case, a 65-year-old man in Delhi was originally sentenced to 10 years in jail for assaulting his 6-year-old granddaughter.

The court later changed his sentence to 5 years because some of the most serious charges, like fingering and penetration, couldn't be proven.

However, the court believed the girl's claim that the man touched her private parts.

In the second case, a man in Jharkhand was originally sentenced to death for raping and murdering a 5-year-old girl.

The court changed his sentence to life in prison because they thought there was still a chance he could be reformed.

Both courts decided that the evidence wasn't strong enough to support the most severe punishments, so they reduced the sentences.
