India reports 49 lakh typhoid cases in 2023
A big study found that in 2023, India had about 49 lakh cases of typhoid fever, which is a sickness caused by bad bacteria in food and water.
This sickness made about 7,850 people very sick and caused their deaths.
Most of these cases were in Delhi, Maharashtra, and Karnataka.
The study also found that many people who got typhoid had to go to the hospital because the medicine that usually helps didn't work anymore.
This is called antibiotic resistance.
The study says that to stop typhoid, we need to give kids a special vaccine and make sure we use medicines correctly.
The study looked at lots of other studies to find this information.
A study estimated 49 lakh typhoid cases and 7,850 deaths in India in 2023.
Delhi, Maharashtra, and Karnataka accounted for nearly 30% of the national burden.
Six lakh of the 7.3 lakh hospitalizations were due to fluoroquinolone-resistance.
Children aged 5-9 had the highest number of typhoid cases, while children aged 6 months to 4 years had the highest hospitalizations and deaths.
The study recommends introducing the typhoid conjugate vaccine and controlling antimicrobial resistance to combat the disease.
