Indian Bank Strike Highlights Five-Day Week Deadlock During BRICS Summit

Indian Bank Strike Highlights Five-Day Week Deadlock During BRICS Summit

Bank employees in India are going on strike for one day.

They want the government to officially approve a five-day work week.

An agreement to close banks on all Saturdays was reached in March 2024, but the final government notice has not been issued.

Public-sector banks may be mostly unable to provide normal branch services.

Many private banks may stay open because fewer of their employees belong to unions.

Digital services such as UPI, IMPS, and online banking are expected to keep working.

The strike happens just before the BRICS summit in New Delhi.

Employees who join the strike will lose one day of basic pay and allowances.
