AIIMS Expert Advocates Metabolic Surgery for Uncontrolled Diabetes
A doctor at AIIMS Delhi says that many people in India have uncontrolled diabetes, which can cause serious problems like kidney failure and heart attacks.
He suggests that a special kind of surgery, called metabolic surgery, can help control diabetes.
This surgery is done on the stomach and intestines, not the pancreas like in Type 1 diabetes.
The doctor says that after this surgery, many patients no longer need diabetes medicine.
The surgery costs between Rs 3 to 6 lakhs and is recommended for people aged 18 to 65.
The doctor also mentioned that this surgery was officially recognized as a treatment for diabetes in 2016.
Uncontrolled diabetes is a growing crisis in India, with 70 million people affected, 50% of whom have uncontrolled diabetes.
Metabolic surgery is recommended for uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and was recognized by the International Diabetes Federation in 2016.
The surgery is performed on the stomach and intestines, making the stomach smaller and bypassing the duodenum.
Post-surgery, many patients show near-normal blood sugar levels and are off diabetes medications.
The cost of the surgery ranges from Rs 3 to 6 lakhs, and it is beneficial for patients aged 18 to 65 years.
