India's $1 Trillion FDI Milestone Masks Troubling Outflow
India celebrated reaching $1 trillion in foreign investment since 2000.
However, when considering money leaving the country, the net investment is much lower.
This is because companies are sending money back to their home countries and Indian companies are investing abroad.
This is also part of a larger global trend where less money is being invested across borders.
India's shift towards services rather than manufacturing may also be affecting these numbers.
India reached a $1 trillion cumulative FDI milestone since 2000, as noted in December 2024.
Gross FDI inflows in 2024-25 were $81 billion, the third highest ever, but net flows were around $400 million.
A significant amount of funds are moving out of India due to repatriation and outward investments.
The decline in net FDI is part of a global trend, with net FDI as a share of GDP falling.
The shift towards services in FDI is noted, but may benefit a smaller portion of the workforce.
