Israel Defends Syrian Air Base Strike Amid US Tensions

Israel attacked a Syrian military air base early Tuesday.

The base is in Idlib in northern Syria, about 45 miles from the Turkish border.

Israel said it wanted to stop Turkey from sending troops, weapons or other military equipment there.

Israeli officials said they had warned Syria that this could threaten Israel.

Syria and Turkey said Israel’s explanation was not acceptable and condemned the attack.

A Turkish official said there were no Turkish forces at the base.

The United States said the attack could make the region less stable.

American officials also wondered whether Israeli politics influenced the decision.

Talks between Israel and Syria about reducing tensions have continued without producing a security deal.
