Delhi Bans Idol Immersion in Yamuna, Other Water Bodies

Delhi has made rules to stop people from putting festival idols directly into the Yamuna and other water bodies.

Idols may be immersed only at places specially chosen by local authorities.

The rules apply during Ganeshotsav and Durga Puja celebrations.

Officials say some idols and paints can harm fish, plants and people because they may contain dangerous metals.

Idol makers are being asked to use natural clay and materials that break down safely.

People can instead use buckets or temporary ponds at home, in housing areas or in parks.

Flowers and decorations should be removed and disposed of separately.

Government agencies will monitor the water and enforce the rules.

Breaking the order can lead to a fine and other legal punishment.
