Ancient Valley Temple of Sun God Ra Discovered in Egypt
Archaeologists in Egypt have found a very old temple that was part of a bigger temple complex dedicated to Ra, the ancient Egyptian sun god.
This temple, called a valley temple, is about 4,500 years old and was used by people to worship and access the main temple higher up.
The temple had a special entrance with columns and a calendar of religious events.
People could also go up to the roof to look at the sky.
Later, the temple was used as a place to live, and archaeologists found game pieces from a popular ancient board game called senet.
This discovery helps us understand how these temples were used for worship and daily life in ancient Egypt.
A 4,500-year-old valley temple dedicated to the sun god Ra was discovered at Abu Ghurab, near Cairo.
The temple was part of a larger sun temple complex commissioned by Pharaoh Niuserre during the Fifth Dynasty.
Key features include a columned entrance portico, a public calendar of religious events, and a staircase leading to the roof for astronomical observations.
The temple was initially used for worship but later converted into a residential area, with evidence of ancient board games like senet.
Previous excavation attempts in 1901 were abandoned due to high groundwater levels, but recent excavations in 2024 have successfully uncovered significant details.
