Antarctica's Emperor penguins reclassified as endangered; look at wildlife

Antarctica is one of the coldest, windiest places on Earth, and it gets almost no rain.

Even so, about 235 kinds of animals have learned to live there.

Most of them live in the ocean, where there is much more food than on the frozen land.

Penguins are the most famous Antarctic animals, and eight types of penguins live in the region.

The Emperor penguin is the biggest of them all, standing about 45 inches tall.

In April 2026, Emperor penguins were listed as endangered because the sea ice they need to raise their babies is shrinking as the planet warms.

Antarctica is also home to huge animals like leopard seals, orcas, and the blue whale, the biggest animal on Earth.

Blue whales can grow up to 110 feet long and weigh as much as 330,000 pounds.

In the summer months, from December to March, visitors often spot humpback and minke whales.

Even the bottom of the sea is bursting with life, with some areas holding up to 155,000 tiny creatures in one square metre.
