Sovereign Gold Bonds Deliver Massive Gains
Some people in India bought special gold bonds called Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB) a few years ago.
These bonds are like a promise from the government that they will pay you based on the price of gold.
Recently, some of these bonds have finished their time period, and the people who bought them made a lot of money.
One type of bond, called the 2017-18 Series-XII, turned an investment of Rs 2 lakh into Rs 9.32 lakh in about seven years.
This happened because the price of gold went up a lot.
The government also paid these investors a small amount of interest every year.
So, these bonds were a good way to make money over a long time.
Other similar bonds also did well, giving people good returns.
These bonds are better than buying physical gold because you don't have to worry about storing it or checking if it's real.
The government takes care of everything, and you get paid directly into your bank account.
Many people are now investing in gold and silver through ETFs, which are easy to buy and sell.
Central banks are also buying more gold, showing its importance.
However, experts say that while gold can make money, its main job is to protect your savings from risks like currency changes.
The 2017-18 Series-XII SGB tranche turned a Rs 2 lakh investment into Rs 9.32 lakh at maturity, delivering a 366.3% return.
Gold prices have more than doubled in the past two years, reaching a record $4,381 per troy ounce in October 2025.
The RBI set the final redemption price for the 2017-18 Series-XII at Rs 13,245 per gram, based on the average closing price of 999-purity gold.
Investors in the 2017-18 Series-XI SGB tranche will receive Rs 12,801 per gram, representing a 341% return.
SGBs offer advantages over physical gold, including no storage concerns, purity guarantees, and an annual interest rate of 2.5%.
