Syria Arrests Assad-Era Officer After Austria Conviction

Syrian authorities arrested a former police officer named Musab Abu Rukba.

He once worked under Bashar al-Assad’s government.

An Austrian court sentenced him to eight years in prison for abusing and sexually assaulting detained opponents.

Abu Rukba said he was not guilty.

He left Austria while appealing the conviction and returned to his hometown in Syria.

Syrian officials said he entered the country illegally and tracked him down.

They sent him to authorities for more legal steps.

It is not yet known what crimes Syria may charge him with or whether Austria asked for his return.
