7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Colombia, Tremors Felt in Venezuela

On Monday morning, a very strong earthquake happened in Colombia, a country in South America.

An earthquake is when the ground shakes, like the whole earth is rumbling.

Scientists called the USGS use special tools to measure how strong the shaking is.

They said this earthquake was extremely strong, with a magnitude of 7.4.

It started near a small town called San José del Palmar, and the shaking was even felt in the neighbouring country of Venezuela.

In the city of Cali, part of a building collapsed because of the shaking.

The scientists are still studying the earthquake, and they may change the number they gave if they learn more.

People in the area are being told to stay alert and follow official safety guidance.

A few months ago, Venezuela also had two very big earthquakes, so this part of the world has had a lot of shaking lately.

When big earthquakes happen, it's important to listen to adults and officials and follow their safety instructions.
