Karnataka to appeal water release order
Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are having a dispute over water from the Cauvery River.
The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) ordered Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.
However, Karnataka says it doesn't have enough water because of less rainfall and is appealing this decision.
Karnataka has only 46 TMC of water, and it needs 12 TMC just for drinking water in 10 districts.
Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, has 41 TMC of water in its Mettur reservoir and says it needs the water from Karnataka.
The two states are trying to resolve this issue through legal and political means.
Karnataka has decided to appeal the CWRC's directive to release 3,500 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.
Karnataka claims it has only 46 TMC of water available and cannot comply with the directive due to deficient rainfall.
Tamil Nadu has 41 TMC of water in the Mettur reservoir and has stored water efficiently.
Karnataka's Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar invited Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to visit the Cauvery reservoirs to see the water scarcity.
The CWMA is expected to convene a meeting soon to consider Karnataka's appeal.
