China Rewrites WWII History, Downplaying Nationalist Role
After WWII, China's government changed how it told the story of the war.
While the Nationalists led the fight against Japan, the Communists, who later ruled China, took more credit.
The new story begins the war earlier and focuses on the unity of the Chinese people's resistance.
Today, the government emphasizes Japanese cruelty, while the island of Taiwan remembers the war differently and has a diplomatic relationship with Japan.
Japan surrendered to China on September 2, 1945, ending the occupation.
The Chinese government, led by the Communist Party, has re-evaluated the history of WWII.
The Nationalist government led the military campaigns against Japan.
The current narrative emphasizes the Chinese people's united resistance, beginning in 1931.
