Chandigarh Sees Surge in Cybercrime: Thousands of Complaints, Low Recovery
Over the last two years, a lot of people in Chandigarh have reported cybercrimes like online scams, losing a total of Rs 95 crore.
Although many complaints were made, not all turned into official police reports (FIRs), and only a small amount of the money was recovered.
Experts say this is because more people are using the internet and digital payments, but not everyone knows how to stay safe from online tricksters.
The police are asking people to be careful and report any suspicious activity.
Chandigarh reported 17,075 cybercrime complaints between April 2023 and March 2025.
Financial losses from cybercrimes totaled approximately Rs 95 crore.
Only Rs 14.86 crore, less than 16%, of the stolen money was recovered.
244 FIRs were registered, and 200 arrests were made during the period.
Experts cite increasing digital payment use and lack of awareness as contributing factors.
