Indian Thali Costs Drop: Veg & Non-Veg Meals Less Expensive
The cost of making vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals at home in India decreased by about 6% in May 2025 compared to the previous year.
This happened because the prices of key ingredients like tomatoes, onions, potatoes, and chicken went down.
Vegetable oil and cooking gas prices slightly increased, which prevented a bigger price drop.
Month-to-month, vegetarian thali prices stayed the same, while non-vegetarian thali prices went down.
Home-cooked vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis cost 6% less in May 2025 compared to May 2024.
Tomato prices decreased by 29% year-over-year to ₹23/kg.
Onion prices dropped 15% and potato prices fell 16% YoY.
Broiler chicken prices also fell 6% YoY.
