India's Three-Row EV Market Surges, Automakers Prepare New Launches
India is selling a lot more big electric cars that can seat six or seven people.
In the first five months of 2026, almost 17,500 of these cars were sold, which is three times more than all of 2025.
A company called Mahindra sells most of them, especially a model called the XEV 9S.
Most buyers are choosing cars that cost between 25 and 35 lakh rupees, showing they want more space and features.
Tata Motors plans to launch a new big electric SUV called the Safari, but it will need good price, range, and a smart launch to compete with Mahindra.
Sales of three‑row battery EVs jumped from 190 units in 2024 to 17,492 units in Jan‑May 2026.
Mahindra’s XEV 9S dominates the segment with 80.9% market share, followed by Kia Carens EV at 10.1%.
Seven‑seater models accounted for 17,282 of the 17,492 units sold, while six‑seaters sold only 210 units.
Vehicles priced between Rs 25–30 lakh and Rs 30–35 lakh made up nearly 78% of sales, showing premiumisation.
Tata Motors plans to launch the Safari EV, but will need competitive pricing, range and launch strategy to compete with Mahindra.
