Temasek Backs Singapore Airlines’ Air India Strategy Amid Scrutiny

Temasek Backs Singapore Airlines’ Air India Strategy Amid Scrutiny

Temasek is a Singapore investment company that is the largest shareholder of Singapore Airlines.

Singapore Airlines owns about one-quarter of Air India, and Tata Sons owns the rest.

Air India has reportedly asked its owners for about $1.5 billion more.

Temasek supports the investment as a long-term plan because India could become another important hub for Singapore Airlines.

It says rebuilding Air India will take many years and may not progress smoothly.

Air India has faced airspace restrictions, geopolitical disruptions, fuel-price problems and the effects of a crash that killed 260 people.

The reports cite significant losses, although they give different figures for Air India and the combined Air India group.

Singapore Airlines’ profits also fell, partly because of Air India’s losses.

Singapore lawmaker Kenneth Tiong opposes using Temasek-linked money, while Singapore Airlines has not promised additional funding.
