Indian Navy Veteran Rearrested in Qatar
A former Indian Navy Commander named Purnendu Tiwari is still in jail in Qatar.
He was one of eight Indian Navy veterans pardoned by Qatar's government in 2022 after India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened.
However, he was rearrested in December 2023 on new financial charges.
His family says these charges are false and that he is being unfairly targeted.
They are asking the Indian government to help bring him home.
Tiwari has multiple health issues and his family is very worried about him.
They believe he should be back in India with the other veterans who were pardoned.
The Indian government is aware of the situation and is in touch with Tiwari and his family.
Purnendu Tiwari, a former Indian Navy Commander, was rearrested in Qatar in December 2023 following a court verdict.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the arrest, stating it is related to an ongoing case in Qatar.
Tiwari was initially pardoned in 2022 along with seven other Indian Navy veterans, but he was left behind when the others were released and returned to India in February 2024.
His family alleges that the charges are fabricated and that the CEO of Dahra Global shifted the blame onto Tiwari.
The Indian embassy is in touch with Tiwari and his family, and the matter is sub judice, according to the MEA.
