Italy Distances Egypt From Regeni Verdict as Government Faces Opposition

Giulio Regeni was an Italian student studying at Cambridge University.

He disappeared in Egypt in January 2016.

His body was found about a week later, and investigators said he had been tortured.

An Italian court found three Egyptian officials guilty of kidnapping him.

The officials were not present at the trial, and Egypt did not cooperate with the case.

Egypt has denied that its government was involved.

Italy’s government says it wants to keep working with Egypt on migration, energy and regional security.

Opposition politicians and Regeni’s lawyer say Italy should put justice before its relationship with Egypt.
