Botswana Faces Backlash Over Elephant Killings for Independence Celebrations

Botswana allowed 23 elephants to be killed during its Independence Day celebrations.

Officials said the meat would help rural communities that need food.

They also said hunting can help manage the country’s large elephant population.

Botswana has an estimated 130,000 elephants, more than any other country.

But conservationists disagreed with the decision.

One group warned that surviving elephants could become more defensive after a herd member is shot.

Former president Ian Khama also opposed the move.

He worried it could lead to elephants being killed at future national events.
